Important Suffrage Events in History

1776- Abigail Adams tells her husband,John Adams, to "Remember the Ladies" while attending the Continental Congress in Philadelphia when all the men invited were working on the Declaration Of Independence. The Declaration specifies that "all men are created equal."

February 14,1847-Anna Howard Shaw is born in New Castle, England.

1851- Former slave Sojourner Truth delivers her "Ain't I a Women Speech" at a women's rights convention in Akron ,Ohio.

1872- Susan B. Anthony is arrested  and brought to trial for attempting to vote for Ulysses S. Grant in the presidential election.

1878- A women's suffrage amendment is introduced to The United States Congress. When the amendment was passed the wording remained the same.

July 2,1919- Anna Howard Shaw dies of pneumonia.

August 26,1920- The 19th amendment is ratified.

1988- Anna Howard Shaw is remembered and thanked with a statue that still stands today in Big Rapids, Michigan.
